HALIFAX, Canada, May 13, 2008 (AFP) - Team Canada forward Eric Staal will miss the quarter-finals of the World Ice Hockey Championships following the death of his grandfather, sports network TSN reported Tuesday.
Staal is to return to his hometown of Thunder Bay for the funeral and miss Wednesday´s quarter-final between the undefeated Canadians and Norway in Halifax.
He will return to Quebec City if the Canadians advance to Friday´s semi-finals.
Staal scored a game-high four goals in Canada´s 10-1 win over Germany in the round robin on Saturday.
The Canadians are trying to capture their 25th world title and become the first country to win the world title on home ice in 22 years.
