BRATISLAVA, June 26, 2008 (AFP) - Slovakia´s ice hockey federation appointed Jan Filc, who led the team to gold in the 2002 World Championships, as its national coach after a six-year gap on Thursday.
"I accepted the offer mostly because I am a part of the federation board. I feel responsible for how the Slovak hockey will look and where it will go," Filc, the 55-year-old federation vice-president, said.
The coach who piloted the team to its biggest successes, gold at the world championship in 2002 and silver at the 2000 championships, returns as national coach post after a six year interval. He will take up his old job again from July 1.
Filc said earlier that his main motivation is to try and get Slovakia back to the top world position it enjoyed six and eight years ago.
Slovakia´s performances at the world championships have plummeted since his departure with the team being forced this year to compete to stay in the sport´s top echelon after coming 13th overall in the competition in Canada.
The federation decided at the beginning of June not to prolong its contract with former coach Julius Supler.
