ATLANTA, Georgia, June 20, 2008 (AFP) - John Anderson was named coach of the National Hockey League´s Atlanta Thrashers here Friday after guiding the club´s top developmental club to a minor-league championship.
Anderson replaced Thrashers general manager Don Waddell, who took over bench duties last October 17 after firing Thrashers coach Bob Hartley barely two weeks into an NHL season where they failed to qualify for the playoffs.
"This team has some great talent and I look forward to the challenge or maximizing our potential and returning to the playoffs," Anderson said.
Anderson, 51, guided the Chicago Wolves to an American Hockey League crown and had won three other league crowns since he began guiding the Wolves in 1997. The Canadian also coached the Quad City Mallards to a minor-league title.
"John has an impressive record of success as a head coach and we are excited to be adding him to our organization," Waddell said. "He´s a proven winner whose leadership and experience behind the bench will play a vital role in the resurgence of our hockey club."
Anderson played for 12 seasons in the NHL, scoring 282 goals in stints with Toronto, Quebec and Hartford. He notched a career-best 37 goals with Toronto in the 1983-1984 season. He played his final NHL season in 1988-1989.
