RALEIGH, North Carolina, June 19, 2008 (AFP) - The Carolina Hurricanes Thursday agreed to terms with Tim Gleason on an 11 million-dollar deal that will keep the defenseman with the National Hockey League team for four more years.
Gleason will receive two million dollars in 2008-09 and an extra 500,000 dollars each of the next three seasons, culminating with a 3.5 million-dollar salary in 2011-12.
"We are very happy to get Tim signed long-term," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He is a very important player to our team and our defense going forward."
Gleason, 25, was drafted 23rd overall by Ottawa in 2001. He set career highs of three goals, 84 penalty minutes, 80 games played and a plus-5 rating with Carolina last season.
He also ranked first among Hurricanes defensemen and 20th among NHL blue-liners with 107 blocked shots.
